SCHOLARSHIPS

The following scholarships are specific to students/majors given in parentheses after the title.

David & Dennis Eddings Scholarship in Literature & Writing

Faculty of the English Department will select the scholarship winner from students who meet the following criteria:

  • Be a prospective or current full-time student at Western Oregon University
  • Junior or Senior status
  • English Major
  • Have an earned grade point average (GPA) in the major of 3.5 or higher
Charles and Sylvia ALVA Scholarship in Linguistics Studies (English, Linguistics, Language Arts, TEFL)

Each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Upper division student
  • Focused area of study will be English linguistics
    • This includes:
      • English majors with a Linguistics concentration
      • Linguistics minors
      • Students seeking a TEFL certification
      • Humanities majors with a Linguistics focus
      • Language arts education majors (Secondary/middle-high school language arts teaching)

Preferences: Applicants with a desire to teach English in secondary schools

R.S. Baker Memorial Scholarship (any major in the Humanities Division)

Each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a prospective or current full-time student at Western Oregon University
  • Be age 24 or older
  • Have an earned grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher
  • Have a declared major in the Humanities [Communication Studies, English Studies—any concentration, German Studies, Humanities, Philosophy, Spanish]
  • Demonstrated financial need

Joseph Soldati Humanities Scholarship (any major in the Humanities Division)

Each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a declared major in the Humanities [Communication Studies; English – Literature, Linguistics, Writing; German; Humanities; Philosophy; Spanish]
  • FAFSA® and WOU General Scholarship application, only, are required
  • Apply here
Interdisciplinary Studies Scholarship (IDS majors can have English as a focus area)

Each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate academic merit
  • The award will help the student complete a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies
  • FAFSA® and WOU General Scholarship application, only, are required

Leonard W. & Ruth D. Rice Scholarship (any major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences)

Each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a senior at Western Oregon University
  • Full time (12 credits or more per term)
  • GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Have a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • FAFSA® and WOU General Scholarship application, only, are required

Beverly Freer Scholarship (any major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences)

Each applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Female Student
  • Demonstrate Financial Need
  • Have a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts
