Finance & Administration Internship Program
The Finance & Administration division has created its first ever division-wide Internship Program. This program was created to help students with career readiness through hands on experience. The division is accepting applications via Handshake through March 1, 2022 for the following four paid internships for Spring term 2022.
Capital Planning & Construction Internship
Department: Capital Planning and Construction (CPC)
Work Schedule: Determined with Supervisor
Hours Per Week: 10 Hours (approximately)
Wage/Salary: $15.00 / hr
Start Date: April 1, 2022
End Date: June 3, 2022
Department Description: CPC provides ongoing management support of construction/renovation/maintenance projects representing the interests of the University including providing directions to architects, engineers, contractors and project managers, implementation of budget controls, project bid-ability, construct-ability, bid specifications, change orders, administration of various contracts, management of the inspections, and other project management requirements during the preliminary planning, documentation bidding, and construction phases of various small or large projects.
Learning Objectives: As a result of this internship, the intern will be able to:
- Identify best practices for project management of Western Oregon University’s campus capital projects.
- Understand basic principles for organizing and documenting project related information.
- Describe effective project management methods.
- Evaluate project goals, timelines, and daily tasks to determine work priorities
- Demonstrate professional verbal and written communication with students, University faculty and staff, and community partners
Learning Activities: The intern will:
- Participate in CPC and Customer project meetings
- Directly collect and document Campus Building Inventory.
- Assist in the creation of Campus Standard for Construction Project.
- Help maintain and update the CPC webpage.
- Learn how to track and document project invoices.
- Develop personal and professional development goals
- Meet weekly with supervisor to reflect on development goals and outline project tasks and priorities
Required Qualifications:

- Flexible schedule
- Experience with MS Office and Google Suites

Work schedule:
Approximately 10 hours a week. Funding for 200 hours total throughout the duration of the 2-term internship. Work schedule to be determined with the position’s Supervisor. Interns do not work during Spring Break or finals week, unless agreed upon by the Intern, Supervisor, and Service Learning and Career Development Staff.
Eligibility:
We encourage all students, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and international students, to apply for this position. (This position does not require that students be eligible for federal work-study).

Software Development & Applications Support Internship
Department: University Computing Solutions (UCS)
Work Schedule: Determined with supervisor
Hours Per Week: 10 Hours (approximately)
Wage/Salary: $15.00 / hr
Start Date: April 1, 2022
End Date: June 3, 2022
Department Description: University Computing Solutions (UCS) mission is to support the WOU mission through collaborative implementation of technology for students, faculty, staff, and the community. We are committed to keeping campus technology current and accessible. We strive to be campus leaders in the adoption, promotion, and use of information technology in support of the teaching and learning mission of Western Oregon University.
Learning Objectives: As a result of this internship, the intern will be able to:
- Utilize technical skills to deliver application support and/or software development tasks and projects to UCS clients.
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with UCS Team members
Learning Activities: The intern will:
- Actively participate in and contribute to University Computing Solutions DevClub (Developer’s Club) meetings and events
- Participate in at least one UCS software development or applications support project or task utilizing technical skills, and work in a team environment with other UCS Team Members.
- Develop personal and professional development goals
- Meet weekly with supervisor to reflect on development goals and outline project tasks and priorities
Required Qualifications:
- Strong interest in software development and/or information technology
- Desire to learn and grow
- Good interpersonal communication skills and a friendly demeanor
- Ability to think creatively
- Self-motivated and willing to take initiative
- Flexible schedule during business hours, from 8am – 5pm, Monday through Friday
- Experience with HTML, CSS, Javascript, SQL, and a scripting language
Preferred Qualifications:
- Website development with data driven dynamic content

Computer Science, Information Systems, and other majors if qualifications are met

Campus Public Safety Internship
Department: Campus Public Safety (CPS)

Department Description: The mission of the Campus Public Safety Department of Western Oregon University is to engender a sense of safety and security by providing an environment in which students, faculty, staff and visitors can learn, work, and live. We are responsible for Public Safety, Environmental and Occupational Safety, Emergency Preparedness, and Parking Enforcement at Western Oregon University.
Learning Objectives: As a result of this internship, the intern will be able to:
- Evaluate project goals, timelines, and daily tasks to determine work priorities.
- Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication with students, faculty, and staff.
- Develop team building and leadership skills.
- Gain experience gathering statistics and creating reports.
Learning Activities: The intern will:
- Participate in committee meetings (Safety Committee, Commencement Committee, etc) and assist with projects related to those committees.
- Complete clerical work, enter data, and create reports as assigned.
- Assist with event set-up and complete tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Valid driving license with a clean driving history.
- Good academic and judicial standing.
- Ability to keep information confidential.
- Experience with MS Office and Google Suites.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
- Self-motivated and able to take initiative.
- Flexible schedule, including possible weekends and after hours

Finance Internship
Department: Finance (Accounting & Business Services, Budget & Planning, Treasury, and Vice President for Finance & Administration)

Department Descriptions:
Finance & Administration (F&A) encompasses the departments of Accounting & Business Service, Budget & Planning, Capital Construction & Planning, Facilities Services, Human Resources and Payroll, Public Safety, Treasury, and University Computing Solutions. This internship will focus specifically on the finance-related office within F&A. F&A’s overarching vision is to be campus’ partner of choice. Our mission is to use technology and communication to move from tactical to strategic.
Accounting & Business Services: This department is responsible for the processing and reporting of all financial transactions for campus. The operation of the office directly affects each of the institution’s employees, students, suppliers, student sponsors, employees of other state agencies, and members of the public. The office’s operations are vital to the independent operation of the campus.
Budget & Planning Office: This department provides support to the university by assisting with annual and multi-year budget planning and management of campus budgets, with the mission to inform critical decision-making and ensure sound stewardship of institutional resources. Our goal is to have a transparent and collaborative budget process that is data-driven, equitable, and 100% aligned with institutional priorities. These responsibilities are an integral part of the institution’s ability to fulfill its mission of creating lasting opportunities for student success through transformative education and personalized support.
Treasury: This department provides several treasury functions including reconciling bank accounts, troubleshooting banking issues, overseeing investment earnings, monitoring cash balances including ensuring adequate liquidity is available to meet cash needs, and serves as primary contact for those who have questions about treasury-related compliance issues.
Learning Objectives: As a result of this internship, the intern will:
- Have an understanding of the various financial components behind our University’s operations
- Have familiarity with governmental accounting
- Strengthen Excel skills
- Evaluate project goals, timelines, and daily tasks to determine work priorities
- Demonstrate professional verbal and written communication
Learning Activities: The intern will:
- Rotate through Accounting & Business Services, Budget & Planning, Treasury, and the Vice President for Finance & Administration departments to get exposure to the different financial aspects within the University
- Accounting & Business Services: Gain a preliminary understanding/assist with Chart of Account maintenance, year-end preparation, and/or account reconciliation.
- Budget & Planning: Compile tuition and fee data from other Oregon Public Universities and create a spreadsheet that shows comparative costs to WOU.
- Treasury:
- Vice President for Finance & Administration: Shadow CFO and read/discuss the Leadership Competency Study of Chief Business Officers.
Required Qualifications:
- Majoring in Business
- Completed accounting courses (BA211, BA213)
- Good interpersonal communication skills
- Experience with MS Office and Google Suites
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest in future careers in higher education, governmental, or non-profit work
- Focus in Business of Accounting
Work schedule:
Approximately 10 hours a week. Work schedule to be determined with the position’s supervisor. The internship will span Spring term, ending prior to Finals Week.
