POSITION DETAILS

Internship Host Department: Modern Langs / HUM / Bell 302

Work Schedule: Determined with supervisor

Hours Per Week: 10 Hours (approximately)

Wage/Salary: $14.70 / hr

Start Date: January 6, 2026

End Date: June 6, 2025

Department Description:

We serve a diverse student population with a range of goals: heritage speakers looking to deepen their language skills and cultural knowledge, future educators preparing to teach Spanish in K–12 settings, and students in fields like social work, criminal justice, health, and education who want to earn a professional certificate in Spanish to better serve bilingual communities. We also serve students pursuing the German minor, whether they’re interested in culture, travel, international studies, or language learning more broadly. Our mission is to promote linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and real-world application of language skills. We’re committed to helping students become confident, critical thinkers who can use their language skills in meaningful ways, whether in the classroom, in their communities, or in their careers. We also strive to support heritage and bilingual students, recognizing the value of their lived experiences and linguistic abilities. We offer a variety of academic programs, including the Spanish major, Spanish Education major, the Certificate in Spanish for the Professions, and the minor in German. Our courses are designed to build advanced language skills, intercultural competence, and professional readiness. Beyond the classroom, we support students through advising, community-engaged learning, study abroad guidance, and internship opportunities. We also host events that promote language learning and connect students to cultural and career pathways related to their studies.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of this internship, the student will improve their bilingual communication skills by creating content in both Spanish and English for social media, outreach materials, and campus events. They will gain experience writing for different audiences, especially in ways that promote language learning and connecting with other students. The intern will also learn how to plan and promote events, including how to communicate with campus partners, organize tasks, and help bring people together around a shared goal—supporting Spanish language study. They will gain hands-on experience using social media in a professional way, learning how to plan posts, create graphics or videos, and think about what makes content engaging and effective. Throughout the internship, the student will meet regularly with me to reflect on their work and set goals that match their interests, whether that’s improving communication skills, learning more about marketing, or preparing for future work in education, nonprofits, or bilingual professions

    Learning Activities:

    • Creating bilingual content (in Spanish and English) for social media to promote Spanish language study, especially for heritage speakers. This may include posts about student success stories, cultural events, language tips, and benefits of bilingualism.

    • Developing and implementing a small social media campaign with a clear goal (e.g., raising awareness about the Spanish major, sharing why students choose to study Spanish, or encouraging enrollment in specific courses). The interns will be encouraged to bring their own creative ideas to this campaign.

    • Assisting with the planning and promotion of a campus event during Spring 2025 that highlights the value of language study. This may include designing flyers, helping coordinate logistics, and working with faculty and student groups.

    • Attending bi-weekly meetings with the faculty supervisor to discuss progress, reflect on learning, and adjust tasks based on interests and goals.

    • The intern will also be encouraged to explore other small projects that connect with their personal interests. For example, researching language promotion strategies, or conducting short interviews with students or alumni. There is flexibility built into the internship so that students can help shape the experience in a way that supports their professional development.

    • Practice and improve upon their professional verbal and written communication skills.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Fluency in both Spanish and English (spoken and written), with the ability to communicate clearly in both languages.
    • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to create engaging and appropriate content for different audiences.
    • Interest in language learning, bilingualism, and cultural promotion.
    • Basic familiarity with social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok.
    • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and follow through on assigned tasks.
    • Willingness to collaborate, take feedback, and participate in regular check-ins with the supervisor.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Spanish Major or Minor

    Major(s)/Minor(s) Desired:

Spanish major/minor preferred but open to any majors/minors.

Additional comments: I also hope to broaden the scope of our outreach, not only to promote Spanish, but to support and highlight language study more broadly at WOU, including German and the German Club. There may also be opportunities for the intern to collaborate with the newly reactivated Spanish Club, as well as explore possible connections with the ASL program in the College of Education. This flexibility could allow the intern to engage with a wider range of language-related communities on campus.

Students frequently participate in collaborative research with faculty in areas such as analytical chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, and forensic science.

The department also plays a critical role in teacher preparation, pre-health advising, and interdisciplinary initiatives, including partnerships with local high schools through the Willamette Promise program. Through this program, WOU chemistry faculty collaborate with high school teachers to offer dual-credit chemistry courses and provide access to authentic laboratory experiences on campus.

As a teaching-focused institution, WOU’s Chemistry Department is dedicated to inclusive and equity-minded instruction, student-centered curriculum design, and expanding access to STEM education for underrepresented populations across Oregon and beyond.

The CiP intern will also have an opportunity to choose which area of the program they would like to “lead.” For instance, this year on of our interns is managing all of our social media and one is managing events – both based off of personal interests.
