Mark Henkels retired in June 2023. He came to Western in 1988 to help start the public policy and administration program. Since that time he expanded his teaching and advising to include political science and legal studies. His teaching interests centered on American public policy, and regularly taught the following courses: Policy Dimensions of the Aging Society, Environmental Values and Political Action, Introduction to Administrative Law, Introduction to Policy Analysis, and Democracy: Theory and Practice. Dr. Henkels has an ongoing research interest in state politics, particularly Oregon state government. He also presented regularly on the challenges and opportunities created for the aging of our society. He strongly believes that a modern society needs a capable and ethical public service.
