Meet Hailey Toornstra, a sophomore at WOU, double majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology, with a minor in ROTC Military Science. She chose WOU for its renowned Criminal Justice program but quickly fell in love with the Monmouth community and the small university atmosphere.
She enjoys walking through campus, studying in quiet areas, and working out in the gym. Hailey is also deeply involved in Army ROTC, where she manages their Instagram account, participates in color guard at sports games, and helps plan various events. She loves the program and values the strong friendships she has built with her fellow cadets.
Hailey is especially grateful for her professors. Professor Moreno, from the Criminal Justice program, has inspired her to think critically and expand her writing skills, while CPT Hawthorne, her ROTC professor, has motivated her to excel in both physical fitness and academics. Hailey admires him as a role model for all cadets.
Follow along in our stories today to learn more about Hailey and ask her some questions!
What a wonderful way to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of service!

Welcome to our first student takeover of the year!
Meet Daniel Johnson, a sophomore majoring in Sociology and minoring in Psychology. He chose WOU for its beautiful nature-filled campus, welcoming environment, and excellent programs in Sociology, Psychology, and American Sign Language.
A highlight for Daniel at WOU so far has been their involvement in Destination Western @wou.orientation, first as a student and later as a Peer Advisor. As a first-gen college student, DW made his transition smoother, and becoming a PA allowed him to give back and connect with others.
They also cherish the lifelong friends he’s made here, calling them his family. Follow along on our stories today as Daniel answers any question you have about being a student at WOU.
